Summary

。。。more

Woody does a lot of name dropping, and it's an OK read。 He does a fairly decent job of clearing his name regarding charges he abused his daughter。 I have always enjoyed his movies and had written him off, (in respect to his current reputation)。 I researched his claims and they seem very accurate。 I wish he would have gave more insight to his thinking about life in general, but I did enjoy the book。 Woody does a lot of name dropping, and it's an OK read。 He does a fairly decent job of clearing his name regarding charges he abused his daughter。 I have always enjoyed his movies and had written him off, (in respect to his current reputation)。 I researched his claims and they seem very accurate。 I wish he would have gave more insight to his thinking about life in general, but I did enjoy the book。 。。。more

I was pleasantly surprised by this book。 I approached it with some trepidation, still under the collective mentality that Mr。 Allen was a tainted artist and that I felt some shame/guilt for enjoying the work of an alleged sexual predator。 I went into this book thinking it would be an autobiography that mainly focused on funny anecdotes and his view on the movies he’s made。 I How to since he would just gloss over the family drama stuff。But a funny thing happened。 Woody presented a clearheaded, ra I was pleasantly surprised by this book。 I approached it with some trepidation, still under the collective mentality that Mr。 Allen was a tainted artist and that I felt some shame/guilt for enjoying the work of an alleged sexual predator。 I went into this book thinking it would be an autobiography that mainly focused on funny anecdotes and his view on the movies he’s made。 I How to since he would just gloss over the family drama stuff。But a funny thing happened。 Woody presented a clearheaded, rational, thoughtful, and evidence-based approach and dissection of all the allegations against him and the media hoopla that exacerbated this false narrative that many people unfamiliar with the details blindly assume to be true。 The case he presents here is so clear that I completely switched my perception of him and felt incredible compassion for this man who I had felt shame around for the last 20 years。Outside of the family drama and allegation stuff, his anecdotes about growing up and making movies and living with his wife of 25 years were charming, filled with wit, and really really funny。 It was a deep pleasure to listen to this on audio and to hear him talk about his life。 。。。more

The first half of this book is brilliant - incredibly funny and also exciting, as stories of the rise to fame and fortune often are。 The remainder is more perfunctory, though still sprinkled with gems。 It would be cruel to ask why someone who claims so frequently to be indifferent to public opinion wants to spend time settling scores, both positive and negative。 A great book for recommendations of films and comedians。 Also obviously fun to compare one’s own view of Allen’s films with his opinion The first half of this book is brilliant - incredibly funny and also exciting, as stories of the rise to fame and fortune often are。 The remainder is more perfunctory, though still sprinkled with gems。 It would be cruel to ask why someone who claims so frequently to be indifferent to public opinion wants to spend time settling scores, both positive and negative。 A great book for recommendations of films and comedians。 Also obviously fun to compare one’s own view of Allen’s films with his opinions。 As for the elephant in the room, he goes through the issues in depth but, as Allen says himself when he reaches that point in the narrative, it would be shame if that issue was the only reason one bought the book。 It has many other qualities to it。 。。。more

Did not enjoy for many reasons。Trying to be funny in every sentence rarely works, especially when it is a long book。 Dont enjoy the blame game on hundred of pages as well, feels like too much peaking in private life interpreted one-sidedly。。and it was as it was biography。。。

Revered by many, reviled by some, Woody Allen started his professional life as a gifted joke writer and stand-up comedian and later turned his talents to a prolific career as a filmmaker with more than 50 features to his name and dozens of Academy Award wins and nominations (though he disparages award shows in general and famously skips the Oscars ceremony every year because it is held the same evening that his jazz band performs in Manhattan)。The first fifty pages of his autobiography chronicle Revered by many, reviled by some, Woody Allen started his professional life as a gifted joke writer and stand-up comedian and later turned his talents to a prolific career as a filmmaker with more than 50 features to his name and dozens of Academy Award wins and nominations (though he disparages award shows in general and famously skips the Oscars ceremony every year because it is held the same evening that his jazz band performs in Manhattan)。The first fifty pages of his autobiography chronicle his misspent youth reading comic books, going to the picture shows and dabbling in prestidigitation。 His first performance in front of a live audience was as an amateur magician, but he soon realized that comedy writing was in his cards。Early in his career, he landed a job on Sid Caesar’s TV show alongside such luminaries as Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Larry Gelbert。 Later, under the guidance of manager Jack Rollins, Woody moved from writing for TV shows to appearances in front of the camera。FUN FACT #1: The title of Woody’s first screenplay, What’s New Pussycat, was derived from an overheard telephone conversation between Warren Beatty and one of his female admirers。The next one hundred and fifty pages scrolls through his list of films in chronological order, providing an abbreviated cast list and a funny anecdote or two about each。 It’s like spending an hour on the IMDb website。 He holds some of his early films in high regard while disparaging some of his more celebrated works such as Annie Hall and Manhattan。FUN FACT #2: After cohabitating with Diane Keaton for a number of years, he dated her younger sister Robin and then her even-younger sister Dory。 Apparently, Woody was a horndog from the word go。 He also makes no bones about the fact that he is a committed Luddite:“I’m not a gadget lover。 I own no watches, carry no umbrellas, own no cameras or tape recorders, and to this day I need my wife to adjust the TV set。 I own no computer, never have gone near a word processor, have never changed a fuse, emailed anyone, or washed a dish。”He even declares that everything he’s ever written was produced on an Olympia portable typewriter。 Strange that someone who works in such a high-tech medium would hold such rabid animus for technology。Woody on religion:“I never bought into the whole religious thing。 I thought it was all a big hustle。 Didn’t even think there was a God; didn’t think he’d conveniently favor the Jews if there was one。 Loved pork。 Hated beards。 The Hebrew language was too guttural for my taste。 Plus it was written backwards。 Who needed that?”FUN FACT #3: Woody was director Louis Malle’s first choice to play one of the two leads in the film My Dinner With Andre along with Andre Gregory, a role that was ultimately played to perfection by Wallace Shawn, who also wrote the screenplay and the play upon which it was based。Pages 200-300 detail the trials and tribulations of his child custody battles with long-time partner Mia Farrow, which later devolved into Woody being forced to defend himself after being falsely accused of child molestation against one of Farrow’s numerous foster children。 It didn’t help matters when he fell in love with, and subsequently married, Soon-Yi Han, another of Farrow’s foster children and a woman less than half his age。 Thankfully, even in the darkest passages of this section, Woody rarely passes up the opportunity to throw in a good one-liner。The last one hundred pages is a sprint through his more recent films。 He explains each film briefly, whom he cast and why, and his degree of personal satisfaction with the work (he never reads reviews or watches his completed films)。Woody on his filmmaking style:“…as a filmmaker I am an imperfectionist。 I have no patience to shoot scenes over and over and get coverage from various angles, however invaluable it is later when editing。 I like to shoot a scene, go on to the next, finish up, and get the hell out of there。”A few words about the stylistic choices used in the autobiography:It was an odd choice to avoid using chapters or formal breaks in the prose, other than an occasional line break followed by a new paragraph with the first two or three words in bold print, seemingly snippets of conversation such as “Anyhow,”, “Where Was I?” and “It Turned Out…” It is a fitting reminder of Woody’s minimalist sensibility, as is the simplistic layout of the book’s cover。It was also fiendishly clever that he included no index at the back of the book, forcing everyone in Hollywood to read or at least skim through his autobiography to find out if any juicy details about their lives were revealed。 And make no mistake: at 85 years of age, Woody pulls no punches。FUN FACT #4: The monthly rent on his first Manhattan apartment was $125。00。Woody employs a plethora of archaic words in his autobiograply that date him as a product of the Depression: yokels, picklepuss, hot-to-trot, pantaloons, frankfurter, tootsie, biddies, floozy, rummies, dipso, filch, dames, gumshoe, slyboots, zook, hoity-toity, toot sweet, hayseed, monkeyshines, crackerjack, bloke, collywobbles, featherbrain, shamus, canoodling, bilked, knockabout, hoosegow。He also doles out a wealth of Yiddish words, and they are so ingrained into his vernacular that he does not even realize he is using them: kvetch, gefilte fish, schlep, schlepped, yenta, shul, zaftig, mitzvah, mishigas, oy vey, gonif, momza, schlemiel, mensch, schnecken, mishugana, schmuck, noodge, latke, punim, tchotchke, Ignatz, klutz, bubbe-meise, shekels, schnook, shiksa, chutzpah, nudnik, fumfered。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book, it is full of the humour that Woody Allen is so famous for, a laugh on every page as he details his rise to fame。 He totally rips into Mia Farrow, understandably perhaps。 The laughs start to dry up a little at this point but gossip-hounds like me who have been following that drama over the years will eat it up。 Well worth reading, particularly for his fans。

This is Woody Allen's autobiography from childhood to present day。。。a very long time to cover in one book that includes background stories for fifty movies and his impressions of hundreds of people in the entertainment industry along the way。 More than halfway through, he first mentions the accusations against him by Mia and Dylan Farrow and that "I hope that isn't the reason you bought this book。" Of course, for many it is。 In great and convincing detail he presents his case that it never happe This is Woody Allen's autobiography from childhood to present day。。。a very long time to cover in one book that includes background stories for fifty movies and his impressions of hundreds of people in the entertainment industry along the way。 More than halfway through, he first mentions the accusations against him by Mia and Dylan Farrow and that "I hope that isn't the reason you bought this book。" Of course, for many it is。 In great and convincing detail he presents his case that it never happened and that Dylan was coached by a vindictive Mia。 On that level, this should be required reading by any member of the public before they decide to judge him。 But aside from all that, this is an often very funny book filled with his characteristic wit and self-deprecating humor。 He is a product of his generation in his descriptions of women he has encountered, usually focusing first on physical beauty, but you see that he also respects women, is even awed by them, within that context。 And none of the women in his life accuse him of using his power as a filmmaker to get them in bed。 The book bogs down a bit with constant name dropping and positive descriptions of people he has worked with that don't vary much。 Despite the image he cultivates, he seems to be a positive person with high self-esteem, at least at this point in his life。 Good reading for laughs, for an historical account of a cinematic artist and as an example of how life and career can be threatened by what are likely false accusations。 。。。more
